Somehow, books have become the breath, bread and blood of my life. Proof that others have been here before, a reminder that others are still waiting their turn. They are the friends that ask the hard questions, the solitude to which I can hide from the world, the worlds that remind me of the beauty entwined with the devastation outside my window. More than anything, I wish to be a part of that immortal cycle, to be changed by the books of the past, to live the books of the present, to change the books of the future.

About Me and To Travel by Book

Welcome to To Travel by Book! I've started this personal blog to chronicle my various literary adventures. Seems my life is full of them these days!

First and foremost- Me. I'm a young woman who's not quite sure of her place in the world yet. I am not a child or a teenager, I'm just self-aware enough to realize that I have no idea what I am doing. I have many passions, all of which I am sure you will hear about in great detail. I'm also a huge dork, kind of obsessed with random information, sci-fi television (only the really bad shows), and fantasy worlds of all sorts. I have one cat- who is adorable but don't let her fool you, she's a beast- a kid sister who means the world to me, and a horrible affinity for using dashes in my writing.

Which brings me back to the point of this blog: my literary adventures! Currently, I am starting on a new craft project- re-purposing old books into new journals. I am also just starting my term serving with AmeriCorps as a literacy tutor. Then, there is the ever present challenge of writing. More important to the purpose of this blog how ever, I have set several reading challenges for myself over the next few years.

First, I am set on making my way through the 170 books featured on Modern Library's 100 Best Novel Lists. What better way to travel than through the eyes and minds of the unknown worlds in other people's imagination? It's one thing to visit another place, it is completely different to visit another mind. Once I've gotten a good start on this list, I'll begin to incorporate other "best of" lists as well.

In addition to this daunting task, my little sister has helped me to realize that the level of required reading in the public school system in this country is laughable. So, as I make my way through the list of the best books of the English language, I'll be trying to comprise a new list- The Required Reading List of DOOM.

This should be fun. Wanna come along for the ride?
